In 2013, the CAA launched a mobile banking solution pilot in collaboration with a major telecommunications provider that was built especially for the purchase of certified cocoa beans.
This solution makes sure that farmers are paid properly and transparently and helps them keep their revenue in another form than cash. Reducing the cocoa system’s dependency on cash will make it easier for farmers to save money and lessen the risk of (armed) robberies. Ultimately, this solution will be linked to bank accounts for even greater saving potential.
The pilot was evaluated and some start-up challenges were identified, before the solution was updated in 2016. The CAA now uses the mobile platform for many payment activities.
